The Fall of Dhaka: History, Ego Clashes, and Our Collective Conscience

Since I first became aware of the world, I have always heard that Bangladesh was once a part of Pakistan, which separated after the war of 1971.

Yet, I have consistently observed people avoiding open discussion on this subject.

When I began reading newspapers, the blame was placed on the military. As time passed, another narrative emerged—that Zulfikar Ali Bhutto did not allow Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to become Prime Minister, which led to rebellion. With further passage of time, a broader understanding developed: there was no single culprit.

Politicians were responsible, and institutions were responsible as well.

In reality, it was a war of ego—a struggle for power. Both sides sought authority, and India took full advantage of this conflict, humiliating Pakistan at every international forum.

The history that reached me came through various books. My father and mother always avoided explaining the reasons behind Bangladesh’s separation. Only a few years ago did I come to understand that in any major tragedy, there is never just one criminal; many factors operate in the background.

I deeply admire a speech by President Nixon:

We will fight over the oceans.

We will fight on the mountains.

We will fight in the farms.

We will never surrender.”

Even today, a strange thought arises in my heart.

Who can stop thoughts, and when can barriers be placed on them?

If the Army Chief had indeed given the order to surrender, then another strategy could have been adopted at that very moment: collective resignations could have been submitted.

Surrender could have been avoided; resistance could have been chosen like the fighters of faith.

Even today, the fall of Dhaka will be mourned. Newspapers and television will broadcast messages saying that we are deeply saddened.

My question is this:

Do we truly feel that sorrow?
